BMW VISION M NEXT – A STATEMENT FOR THE DRIVER.
The BMW Vision M NEXT offers a foretaste of BMW’s dynamic future. The exterior design clearly conveys the brand’s mission statement with its sports-car proportions and the clarity of its surface contouring, which is given added visual impact by bold colour contrasts. The high-class yet minimalist interior revolves around the fully-engaged driver. Digital intelligence provides the driver with useful assistance and enables them to hone their driving style further.
The EASE and BOOST experiences are underpinned by the building blocks for the future of the BMW Group, comprising the innovation areas of Autonomous driving, Connectivity, Electrification and Services (ACES). The vehicle’s design lends these areas visual expression and makes the underlying technology something you can engage with (D+ACES). In 2018, the BMW Vision iNEXT showcased the modular system’s potential for EASE mode. And now the BMW Vision M NEXT highlights how D+ACES is able to enhance the pleasure of sporty driving as well.

The BMW Vision M NEXT provides a glimpse into the future of sporty driving. Whereas the BMW Vision iNEXT illustrated how autonomous driving is set to transform life on board vehicles, the BMW Vision M NEXT demonstrates how state-of-the-art technology can also make the experience of driving yourself purer and more emotionally engaging. In both models, the focus is placed firmly on the people inside. Design and technology make the EASE and BOOST experiences more natural and more intense.

To help them create the sports car of the future, the BMW M design team turned to the iconic BMW Turbo and the groundbreaking BMW i8 for inspiration. This led to the future-focused interpretation of design elements such as the low-slung, almost wedge-shaped silhouette, gullwing doors and colour scheme.
In line with the new BMW design strategy, the BMW Vision M NEXTexudes a powerful character with its sporty proportions and the presence of just a few, crisp lines. The use of confident, vivid colour blocking featuring the matt, highly pigmented shade Thrilling Orange forms a striking contrast to the silk matt paint finish in Cast Silver metallic and brings out even more of the car’s inherent dynamism.
The BMW Vision M NEXT is a progressive hybrid sports car that makes a very clear and confident statement, in terms of both appearance and interaction.

The two gullwing doors open to reveal a cabin that merges the driver and vehicle into one. The interior of the BMW Vision M NEXT is predominantly finished in a dark shade of Midnight Blue, with accents of Thrilling Orange to provide an effective contrast – as on the outside. All functional elements, such as air vents are seamlessly hidden in the geometry, yet they are still highly efficient. The overall effect of the interior is of a harmonious whole rather than a combination of individual elements.
With a tapering form that channels the focus on the driver, the dashboard has a flat, minimalist design. Its surface is lined in a high-quality fabric. The dashboard’s substructure is exposed as it nears the heavily raked windscreen, revealing an open, bionic titanium structure. This gives the interior a light and structural appearance and offers a practical route to minimising weight without losing the rigidity that serves to enhance lateral dynamics.
The BMW Vision M NEXT shows the way ahead for BMW’s famed driver focus. In keeping with the motto “eyes on the road, hands on the wheel” the cabin’s geometry and technology have been devised to help focus attention on the task of driving and prevent distractions. So that the driver’s concentration isn’t disturbed – and even increases at high speeds – the displayed information is adapted to the current speed, based on the principles of focus logic: as the vehicle speeds up, the information centres increasingly on driving-related data and progressively shifts up to the Head-Up Display so that it appears directly in the driver’s field of view.
Fingerprint and face detection sensors are used for both unlocking the doors and starting the vehicle. The sensors are located in the glass area behind the gullwing door and in the backlit BMW logo in the steering wheel. Simply touching them stirs the BMW Vision M NEXT into life. Touching the BMW logo also automatically moves the seat into the ideal position for the driver. The driver then has two different ways of operating the vehicle: by touch using the steering wheel or by voice control with the help of the Intelligent Personal Assistant.
In the BMW Vision M NEXT, intelligent technologies support the driver and display the right content at the right time. Operation is clear and intuitive, with all information presented in the driver’s direct field of view. This is a deliberate counterpoint to the BMW Vision iNEXT, which focused on multimodal operation from every seat.

The only object the driver notices in front of them during the drive is the BOOST Pod. Comprising a steering wheel, a transparent Curved Glass Display and a full-AR Head-Up Display, this central element incorporates all the controls and information needed for the BMW Vision M NEXT driver.
The driving settings can be modified on the steering wheel, while in the Curved Glass Display behind, information such as revs, road speed, energy management, the driver’s heart rate and availability of BOOST+ mode is spread between a total of five clusters. BOOST+ mode can be engaged at the touch of a button to unlock extra power. The car alerts the driver when the ideal moment comes for activating BOOST+ mode.
The entire interior is focused on the BOOST Pod. The geometry has a deliberately low-key feel so the driver can concentrate fully on the driving experience.

The focus logic concept ensures that the information content, the level on which the information is displayed and the control options change according to the driving situation and are shown in the optimum position for the driver’s gaze. Information moves in stages, as follows:

When the car is stationary, the displays in the steering wheel are active.

Once the driver sets off, the information appears in the Curved Glass Display.

And if the driving situation calls for the driver’s undivided attention, for example when accelerating, the readouts will move to the Head-Up Display.
