CO₂ Reductions.

The BMW Group aims to reduce its impact on nature and the environment. Back in 1973, we became the first carmaker in the world to appoint an environmental officer in our organisation. Going forward, we intend to remain a role model and continue improving. Our aim is to use fewer resources, reduce our emissions and avoid waste.

By 2030 we intend to reduce our CO₂e emissions by at least 40 million tonnes compared to 2019.

OUR VISION.

  • The BMW Group has also set concrete targets for CO₂ emissions reductions by suppliers.
  • We partner with our suppliers to identify effective levers to reduce CO₂ emissions.
  • We combine product excellence with stringent environmental and social standards.

CONCRETE MEASURES.

  • We have restructured our supply chain – transparently and to high standards.
  • Together with our suppliers, we agree on measures to reduce CO₂ emissions from our supply chain. Our aluminium and steel suppliers, for example, must use green electricity.

WE ARE COMMITTED TO using minimum RESOURCES IN PRODUCTION.

OUR VISION.

  • We check all the options available locally for the most environmentally-friendly energy supply.
  • We are actively advancing the use of energy from renewable sources at our sites.

CONCRETE MEASURES.

  • We strive to systematically optimise our energy efficiency.
  • Since July 2020, the electricity we source from providers worldwide to power our production has come from 100% renewable sources.

HELPING PROTECT THE CLIMATE BEYOND OUR OWN VALUE CHAIN.

At the BMW Group, our goal is to consistently reduce direct and indirect CO₂ emissions from our plants and sites through effective measures. Since 2021, we have been involved in CO₂ reduction projects beyond our own value chain as well. We support these initiatives voluntarily and without them counting towards our CO₂ reduction targets.

The nature of our involvement in these projects is determined by stringent quality requirements such as additionality, lasting impact and further societal benefit. We work with leading providers such as First Climate and atmosfair to implement the projects.

WE ARE REDUCING REAL EMISSIONS FROM THE USE OF OUR VEHICLES.

OUR VISION.

  • To deliver more than 50 percent fully electric vehicles before 2030 – market conditions, the price and availability of raw materials, and the pace of charging infrastructure development in the second half of this decade permitting.
  • We are increasing the number of kilometres driven emission-free – with eDrive Zones.
  • We are reducing fuel consumption and increasing range with Efficient Dynamics.
  • We remain open to all technologies.

CONCRETE MEASURES.

  • The BMW Group continues to advance the electrification of its fleet. In 2024 electrified vehicle sales totalled 593,215 units, accounting for 24.2% of our total sales. Fully electric vehicles made up 17.4% of total sales.
  • In 2025 the BMW Group offers fully electric cars in almost every key segment it serves, with more than 15 all-electric models by its various brands on the market.

WE SUPPORT AN EFFECTIVE CIRCULAR ECONOMY.

OUR VISION.

  • We are increasing the share of secondary materials in our products.
  • We return end-of-life vehicles to the material cycle.
  • The design and architecture of our vehicles supports recyclability.
  • We are improving the recyclability and second-life capabilities of batteries.

CONCRETE MEASURES.

  • The BMW Group’s BEV customers can return their high-voltage batteries for free.
  • The BMW Group and its national sales organisations and importers are already taking back end-of-life vehicles in 32 different  countries. More than 2,800 takeback points means our customers can return their vehicles for recycling – to help save the environment.

THIS FOCUS TOPIC DELIVERS ON THE FOLLOWING SDGs.

WE USE RESOURCES SPARINGLY IN PRODUCTION.

CO₂-EMISSIONS PER VEHICLE PRODUCED.

*Since 2021 figures have included not only CO2 emissions from production but also emissions from our sites worldwide.

We aim to continue reducing our CO₂ emissions per vehicle produced over the longer term. How? Through consistent investment in our energy efficiency – and by making the most of the opportunities of digitalisation. We already use data analytics in production today, for example to minimise rejects from the bodyshop, or in predictive maintenance for our equipment.

At the BMW Group, we work by the principle of continuous improvement – especially in our search for new, innovative and sustainable ways to reduce our energy consumption. We invest in efficient technologies, optimise existing processes, and are switching to renewables for our energy supply.

When it comes to renewable energies, we have already taken an important step: 100 percent of the energy we source from providers to power BMW Group production comes from renewable sources. In the future, the BMW Group will source an increasing share of its energy via Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), i.e. directly from specific renewable energy generation plants.
