It will undergo the ultimate endurance test in a uniquely high-performance test rig called the BMW Vision Driving Experience. Being a test rig, the BMW Vision Driving Experience is not intended for series production – but its “Heart of Joy” is going to benefit every fully electric Neue Klasse vehicle. Responsible for the drivetrain, brakes, charging, recuperation and steering subfunctions, the control unit can process information ten times faster than previous systems. And in combination with BMW’s very own dedicated BMW Dynamic Performance Control software, it’s about to take driving pleasure to an entirely new level.

BEYOND NEXT-LEVEL DRIVING EXPERIENCE.
While conventional systems work with separate control algorithms for the drive system and brakes, the “Heart of Joy” combines both in a single unit. This allows latencies to be minimised to milliseconds and the full handling potential of the powerful electric drive to be exploited much better.
In terms of feel, the new control unit comprising the “Heart of Joy” and BMW Dynamic Performance Control enables cornering with unparallelled smoothness and ease. It requires fewer control inputs and enables a more accurate and stable line. At slower speeds – in stop-start driving traffic or parking, for instance – direct signal transmissions and rapid information processing ensure a seamless driving experience that’s compelling throughout.
RECUPERATION BOOSTS ENERGY EFFICIENCY.
And that’s not all the “Heart of Joy” can do: by intelligently linking drivetrain, braking and energy recuperation, it also enables more sustainable energy use. In normal, everyday driving, for example, the braking power of the recuperation brake is sufficient, with no additional input from the conventional brakes required for 98 percent of the time. The conventional friction brakes are only needed to brake sharply, in an emergency, for instance. So, as the drive system and braking functions work in symbiosis to recuperate energy, the system boosts energy efficiency by up to 25 percent – which in turn increases range.
Frank Weber, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for development, summarises the situation fittingly: “This is Efficient Dynamics squared.” The first taller Neue Klasse electric model will enter series production later this year, in Debrecen, Hungary – with the “Heart of Joy” on board.
